Once upon a time at a bustling Mexican market a vendor waxed lyrical about the different cold and alluring aguas frescas choices he had. Yet, even within the seas of colourful jars, too many ugly Plastic bottles in Mexico was spoiling the landscape. This is probably where all those bottles come from and look like they all bred overnight!
Then again Mexico loves convenience; who has time to wait in a monstrous queue when they just grab a water bottle off the shelf and get back to the sandy beaches astonishing fast? Beneath this plastic-loving affair there lay an environmental dilemma. Markets and streets are equally dazzling places that have far less appealing rubbish decorating them. Have you ever seen how plastics loves to dance in the breeze is as if it is ruling the world?
This is not making Carlos the fisherman very happy. “I find these bottles in my nets. He laughs derisively when it was said to him; “I’m fishing more garbage than fish!” Carlos’s story is not new. Every soul, including the ocean, which is in itself a big beast fits this narrative.
While plastic has found a place in daily life, it turns out that it does much more harm than was initially known owing to its immense staying power. Recapturing materials from furious onslaughts is sometimes a joke, let’s be realistic, we are being carried away. It’s going to take effort from all of us to encourage a change, remember it just needs a few machetes to keep a game going.
But there are also moments when communities inspire hope. And the last neighborhood fiesta you attended is a great example of what possible alternatives to plastic—remember when someone brought reusa…
It’s heartening. It’s kind of funny how something that looks like a drop in the ocean can grow into a tsunami.
But let’s try not to put all our hope man. Punters are learning to understand. From having paper straws and no more cup of anything on a resort to find the same in bars and even occasionally see some strange Taco stand following a novel trend. Maybe that knock on our door is coming from the future closer than we expected!.
